How Good Is MP3?
By John Penner

A lot of people believe that as long as you have a 44.1kHz sampling rate, and at least 16 bit samples, you're going to get really good sounding audio. Having switched over from using my CD player as my primary source of audio to MP3 files (as they're very handy when you're working on the computer all the time anyways), and having hooked up my computer into the AUX input of my stereo system (instead of using the cheaper PC-speakers), I wanted to find out for myself just how good MP3 stacks up in sound quality compared to older formats I used previously on my stereo - CD and VINYL. Don't laugh, the results were quite surprising.

RIAA Moves Towards MP3
By Michael Robertson

The Secure Digital Music Initiative press conference was hosted 12/15/98 in New York by the RIAA and billed as a momentous occasion. Many were disappointed that the pomp and circumstance accompanying the long list of corporate attendees and music executives had little substance. And indeed the event was virtually void of specifics or even generalities which frustrated many attendees and reporters.

My friend Sean let me borrow his Digital Camera for a while, so I'm putting it to good use. The pictures of the finished pencil holder were put up on the Hobbies page. Pics of my almost lost sunglasses now live on the School page. Added a couple little bits of interesting news to this page. Last but not least, thanks to Dennis Herdman for suggesting an EXTREMELY important modification to my schedule on the School page.

03/04/99, 12:22am

I just added a quote to the Wisdom page. Thanks to UglyTruth for the suggestion. Back to the books, YAY!

02/03/99, 10:35pm

I added a little a bit of stuff to this page. Now you've got some animated gifs to keep you awake. There's a bit of news here now. I'll try to keep it as up to date as possible. The news about andyland.org removing the South Park Real Video Search Engine is dated, but necessary none-the-less. It really was an excellent place to find South Park Videos. Congrats to Andy, on an excellent job.

I'm now considering an "Essentials" page that will have links to all of the must-have apps that the 'net pro's use.

26/02/99, 12:49am

Today I slept in REALLY late (for obvious reasons). I added two more title graphics. One to the Friends page, and one the Work page. I'm much happier with the way the way this site is looking now. I can see how it would have looked rather boring a few weeks ago (or even a few days ago for that matter). I also had an idea for the Work page. I think I will make it a source for comic relief. My job is so ridiculous, there's always going to be lots to make fun of.

25/02/99, 7:44am

Once again, a perfect demonstration of Jason's self control (or lack thereof). There are new title graphics on the Friends page, and the School page. The school page is also getting a bit of an overhaul 'cuz it was WAY too boring before. I desperately need suggestions for what should be done with it (like upcoming tests/assignments/etc), so if you can think of ANYTHING (reasonable), tell me. I've got to wake up in 2 hours and 16 minutes, it is REALLY time to sleep now.

25/02/99, 5:53am

I couldn't stop at one title graphic, I had to do another. As you can see, there's now a nifty Home graphic at the top of this page. You'll also notice that the link at the left, that used to look like this:

has been replaced by the one you see now (at the top of the list in case you forgot). This might only be a temporary change though, since I'm also thinking about redesigning the navigation system.

25/02/99, 5:07am

According to my beloved sister, this site needs a complete graphical overhaul. Well, actually she wasn't the only person to have said that, others have said that it's lacking in the graphics department as well. The message coming from multiple sources was much louder than my ingorance could ignore, so I began the grapical redesign, starting on the Hobbies page. I plan to have similar title graphics on all of the pages, just as soon as I have time to make them. Anyhow, I can't believe I'm up this late (or should I say early). I am gonna be incredibly tired tomorrow. For those of you who actually do visit this site fairly regularly (that's about 5 people), keep the suggestions coming. I appreciate it.

24/02/99, 1:14am

I worked on a wonderful little lab today for CPS393 (my C and UNIX intro course). I was fairly productive since I'm feeling A LOT better today. I'm almost back to 100%, which means I can get back into my workout routine, the one that I was looking forward to doing before I got sick. Of course, you can tell that I'm slightly bitter about the whole sickness thing, but who wouldn't be? There's nothing good about it. Fine, I'm done rambling and complaining. I have a bunch of tests scheduled for the first week back, so I think I've got to pick up the pace a little. My Psychology of Thinking course seems EXTRA scary right now since it's PACKED with obscure definitions that we're supposed to remember. That's enough about my pathetically boring life for now. You may now resume partaking in your important and meaningful everyday online tasks.

23/02/99, 1:49am

Java Assignment 1 is done! I added a Photo Album page, and a Links page. The Wisdom page got some more quotes, and will continue to get more quotes as time passes. I'd like to take the time now to COMPLAIN ABOUT BEING SICK. I hate it! My head feels like it's inflated at about 200psi, I'm hacking HUGE lumps of stuff up from my lungs, and I could have filled a couple Crystal Springs© bottles with the ... well, you know. It's not pleasant. On the upside ... NOPE, there's no upside, BEING SICK SUCKS!

This might help if you had half as much trouble understanding McInerney's description of Horner's Rule as I did.

21/02/99, 3:10am

Congratulations Stacey and Peter!

I just got back from a wedding reception, and decided to add a new page, called: Wisdom. It's gonna be the place where all the neat quotes and sayings will live. There's also a secret bonus page, if you click on the snazzy logo. Later this week I plan on adding more quotes/sayings/etc. to the Wisdom page. I also intend to have a links page, with lots of good computer and/or internet resources, so keep checkin' for that little page o' fun to appear. I'm extra sleepy now, so I'm attacking the sack. zzzzz....

20/02/99, 12:28pm

Reading week starts today, and not a minute too soon. It's a great opportunity to catch up in any of the classes that I feel behind in. It's also a good way to collect any of my sanity that managed to escape during the first half of the second semester. Without the 20+ hours of in class instruction this week, I should have more time to do the things I love; working out, playin' around, programming, and updating my web page of course (you know I had to say that). Despite how wonderful the two week break from academics may seem, the fine people in the school of computer science at RPU would like to remind us of the reason why it's called READING WEEK and not February Break, or Mid-Winter Drinking Week. It's because we're supposed to be reading. What they mean by reading is: working diligently at your assignments and/or essays and labs.

This is what I need to accomplish by the end of READING WEEK:     There IS a little bit more, but it's not too significant. (Really, I just don't want to think about it.)

19/02/99, 10:14am

It turns out that the animated gif logo was not the direct cause of my underachievement in CPS211 (computer science), the wonderful endcoding scheme that our Prof decided to employ proved to be the reason for my discontent. I thought I did fairly well, having studied for SOOO long, having a (false) sense of security that usually comes with HARD WORK! So, yeah, I'm not too happy with my prof right now, and I'm counting the seconds until I can go and complain. Enough about my pathetic preformance in CPS211, we'll talk about the calculus mid-term that I just wrote. First off, it was easier than any calculus test that I had ever written in high school (which incidentally made me VERY happy). So I got 96%, and since the test was worth 30% of my final mark, I'm sitting pretty with 28.8% as my cumulative total mark to date. What this means is that I only need another 21.2% to pass the course. That's the kind of stuff I like to think about! Maybe next time I have tests to write I'll make animated gif logos for good luck.

08/02/99, 10:55pm

A Computer Science quiz on Thursday, a Calculus test on Friday, so what have I been doing? Making a new animated gif logo of course. I'm sure I'll be happy about that when I get smacked with crappy marks in about a week. All the bad stuff aside though, the logo turned out to be really cool. Special thanks to Frank who suggested the new logo idea. The only other thing accomplished today was adding a link to my cousin Melissas home page. (Check the Friends page)

07/02/99, 5:06pm

I just added a few additional essays to the Papers section, improved navigation, and put links up to Dennis Herdman and DJStealth (on the Friends Page). The Hobbies page still isn't up yet. I'll try to make one when I have the time. Speaking of time, I've already spent WAY more of it than I should have on the site today. Time to hit the books.

07/02/99, 5:56am

I'm not quite sure why I'm up this late when I could just as easily have done this tomorrow. No matter, the School page just got finished, and I'm about to hit the sack. I wanted to finish off the Friends page, but I'm WAY too tired for that now. There's more and more being added, with the empty spaces quickly disappearing. (As if empty space is visible anyways). Stay tuned for more updates, more fun, and maybe even a cool Java applet or cgi script.

06/02/99, 4:02pm

This site is VERY new, as a result, most of the links will not work, some portions of the site will look and sound awkward, and the infantile level of my HTML skill will be painfully, painfully obvious. You may have noticed that the name of this site is, well, less than stellar. The grim but true reason for that is because I haven't had much time to come up with a better one. Why haven't I had much time to come up with a better one?

I'm glad you asked. The answer to your question is quite simple really. The kind people in the School of Computer Science at Ryerson Polytechnic University enjoy subjecting their students to incredible amounts of wonderful academic activity. What does that mean?

It means that I spend SO MUCH TIME "exercising my mind" that by the time I close the books, my brain has more in common with a bowl of Jell-O than it does with a "healthy human brain". So if you're lucky enough to have the time and/or creative ability to come up with a better name for my site, PLEASE, click here and let me know.

What's the point of having a web site? The standard responses that people give to that question are:

- "I wanted the world to know more about me"

- "I felt it was an excellent way to express myself"

- "I wanted to learn something new and exciting about computers"

- "Everyone's making such a big deal of this internet thing, I wanted to be part of it"

The reason that I have a web page is because the kind people in the School of Computer Science at Ryerson Polytechnic University allow us to use a certain percentage of their valuable digital storage area for our own personal purposes.

My personal purpose is to have a cool looking site. Anything beyond that is a plus. I intend to have TONS of links pointing to everything that I can think of: computer science info, new technology, new games, new songs, great ideas, etc. I also plan to add some Java and/or Javascript code to this page, along with assorted shell scripts which may or may not do anything beyond say "Hello World!".

I'll try to update this page as often as I remember. If you like what you see on this page you can always send me a message and let me know. If you're upset that I haven't updated it in a while, you can E-Mail me and tell me that too.

I'm done for now, the site is still VERY incomplete, so I won't be mad at you if you get bored really quick. I must WARN you though, the longer this site exists, the more addictive it will get. So go now, and do things that you choose to do, while you still have the choice!
